Wear Purple Day
Start Date: 11/25/2019 All Day
End Date: 11/25/2019

Event Description:

Hey Laurier! Nov. 25 is Wear Purple Day to demonstrate your commitment to ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in our community and beyond!

RSVP on our Facebook event page.

We are asking that individuals, groups, and departments wear purple, take a picture, post it online, right a person or group commitment to tackle GBV and tag #Consent is Golden and #GenerationEquality.

The Sexual Violence Education Action Group is coordinating ‘Wear Purple Day’ to call attention to the international campaign, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and aligns itself with the provincial campaign, Wrapped in Courage.

16 Days of Activism begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Nov. 25 and ends on International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. The 16 Days of Activism also includes the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women on Dec. 6. This is a time to both reflect on violence against women, trans and non-binary folks and to take action to end it.

Check out the Facebook pages for Laurier’s 16 Days of Activism programming for Waterloo and Brantford.

This year’s theme is Generation Equality Stands against Rape! While the names, times and contexts may differ, women and girls universally experience rape, sexual violence, and abuse, in times of peace or war.

Rape is rooted in a complex set of patriarchal beliefs, power, and control that continue to create a social environment in which sexual violence is pervasive and normalized. Exact numbers of rape and sexual assaults are notoriously difficult to confirm due to frequent latitude and impunity for perpetrators, stigma towards survivors, and their subsequent silence.

In recent years, the voices of survivors and activists, through campaigns such as #MeToo, #TimesUp, #Niunamenos, #NotOneMore, #BalanceTonPorc, and others, have put the spotlight on the issue of sexual violence and have reached a crescendo that cannot be silenced or ignored anymore.

That is why, under the umbrella of UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign that marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the UNiTE Campaign is calling on people from all walks of life to learn more and take a stand against the pervasive rape culture that surrounds us.

Join us! Share your photos, messages and videos showing how you are participating in the campaign on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter using #OrangeTheWorld and #GenerationEquality. You can also join the conversation on social media by sharing our campaign materials that you can download here. For more information about “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape” and action ideas, see this year’s concept note.

The Sexual Violence Education Action Group is made up of The Office of Dispute Resolution and Sexual Violence Support, Student Wellness Centre, Centre for Students Equity Diversity and Inclusion, Advocates for a Student Culture of Consent, The Sexual Assault Centre Brant, and The Sexual Assault Support Centre Waterloo Region.
