Nelson Mandela Lecture Series with Geoffrey Kistruck
Start Date: 10/10/2019Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Date: 10/10/2019End Time: 7:00 PM

Event Description:

The Tshepo Institute presents the Nelson Mandela lecture series. Geoffrey Kistruck will deliver the keynote address.

"Is Entrepreneurship the Solution to Poverty?"

Kistruck will address how both scholars and practitioners have come to view entrepreneurship as a promising path for breaking the cycle of persistent global poverty. However, efforts to spur such entrepreneurial activity (i.e. microfinance loans, training programs, etc.) have thus far failed to achieve the desired results. Drawing upon over a decade of field work, Kistruck will share both his empirically-based insights, as well as personal thoughts and critical reflections on such complex issues.

Background

Kistruck is the Ron Binns Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Schulich School of Business, York University in Canada, and Director of the Social Innovation Research Lab. His research involves collaborating with poverty-focused organizations to design and field test theoretically-based solutions to some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.

He is an editor at the Journal of Business Venturing, and has published articles in a number of leading management journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, the Journal of Management Studies, the Journal of Management, the Journal of Operations Management, Organization Studies, and the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.
