End Date: 9/9/2020End Time: 8:00 PM

Event Description:

Wilfrid Laurier University, the Town of Milton and the Milton Public Library are pleased to present the 2020-2021 Laurier Milton Lecture Series.

Wilfrid Laurier has long supported the public role of academics to bring their knowledge and thinking outside of the classroom. The Laurier Milton Lecture Series provides a wonderful opportunity to engage in a public dialogue with citizens of Milton on a broad array of important topics. We are pleased that the presentations represent the current research and analysis of members of different faculties, departments and programs.

Lectures take place the second Wednesday of each month starting September 2020 and until May 2021 from 7- 8 pm. Lectures will take place via Zoom. Registration required and is free. Please register at

September 9th lecture will discuss Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Schools & Communities: Inequality of Opportunity & the Achievement Gap presented by Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education.

Dr. Eizadirad will discuss the importance of centering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in schools and communities to create better supporting environments that reflect the needs of vulnerable students and community members. The goal is to advance the dialogue beyond critique to discussing action-oriented alternative approaches to mitigate systemic barriers perpetuated through inequality of opportunity. A case study of a community organization will be presented that works to close the achievement gap by providing programs and services that minimize the opportunity gap.

Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Wilfrid Laurier University and an instructor in School of Early Childhood Studies at Ryerson University and in the Master of Teaching program at OISE, University of Toronto. He is also an educator with the Toronto District School Board and author of Decolonizing Educational Assessment: Ontario Elementary Students and the EQAO.
