A gay man will not bring his partner to the company Christmas party. A young woman struggling with a mental illness uses vacation days instead of revealing she is going to the doctor. A practicing Muslim goes to his car to pray. A working mom keeps photos of her kids off her desk to appear more career-driven. All of these people have at least one thing in common. More than 60% of workers in the workforce today participate in identity covering.
To unlock the benefits of diversity, employees with diverse lived experiences must feel included. When employees diminish their identities, businesses lose the benefit of unique perspectives. The webinar will allow participants to understand the issues surrounding identity covering and suggest best practice strategies that organizations can take to deter covering.
Takeaways:
- Understand how Identity covering can be detrimental to a company's overall productivity, a company's culture because it presents the workplace as not being receptive or accepting of employees' differences.
- Become aware of the 4 forms of identity covering and how best to address the issues that result.
- How to shift the conversation from what we as women, people of colour, and other minority groups, have to do to blend into what companies need to do to create inclusive and better business environments.
