Event Description:

Public Lecture: Policing and Social Media

The Criminology Department is pleased to host our fall 2016 visiting public scholar, Dr. Christopher J. Schneider (Brandon University), from November 7-11. Schneider is well known for his work on the role of media and information technology and related developments in social control. He is the author/editor of four books and numerous articles and book chapters. His research and commentary have been featured in hundreds of news reports across North America, including the New York Times.

On Wednesday, November 9 at 7:00 Dr. Schneider will be presenting a public criminology lecture on "Policing and Social Media: Understanding New Changes to Publics, Police Image, and Police Legitimacy".

Drawing upon materials from his latest book, "Policing and Social Media: Social Control in an Era of New Media" (Lexington Books | Rowman & Littlefield, 2016) and ongoing research, Dr. Schneider’s talk will illustrate some of the institutional changes in policing related to the expansion of social media. Challenges to police legitimacy on social media have encouraged police agencies to further incorporate media technologies into policing practices, most recently, the implementation of body worn cameras, an issue that will be discussed.
