End Date: 10/24/2018End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description:

As Laurier’s Fall 2018 Staebler Visiting Writer Novelist and memoirist,  Alison Pick will talk about the research and writing process that goes into creating historical fiction at her public talk, “Strangers with the Same dream: On writing historical fiction” at the Veritas Café, Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

Originally from Kitchener, now living in Toronto, Pick is an award-winning author whose accomplishments in three genres – fiction, memoir, and poetry – have been internationally recognized and published in multiple languages. She is the author of three novels, including Far to Go, which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2011, and a memoir, Between Gods, that won the Canadian Jewish Book Award for Memoir.

Pick has taught at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Sage Hill Writing Experience in Saskatchewan, the Humber School for Writers, and the Iceland Writers Retreat. Far To Go, a novel about child evacuation from Czechslovakia in the late 1930s, is being taught as part of Laurier course EN267: Contemporary Canadian Fiction, and Pick will discuss that book in her talk. She will also discuss her latest novel, Strangers with the Same Dream, a dramatic story about kibbutz life in the 1920s Israel.
