Documentary Screening: In Her Sarong
Start Date: 10/16/2018Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 10/16/2018End Time: 8:00 PM

Event Description:
This short documentary will take you to Malaysia where Laurier Brantford Digital Media and Journalism grad Shazlin Rahman investigates the legacy left by her late maternal grandmother, Mok—as a young girl in the British-ruled Malay peninsula, as a young mother in newly-independent Malaysia and, up until her death, as a grandmother to a predominantly female brood of grandchildren. She takes a closer look at Mok's former life as a maker of batik sarongs and the resilience of present-day women batik makers in east coast Malaysia. In trying to preserve Mok’s legacy, Shazlin discovers what strength, beauty and resilience looks like for Malay women like herself, and brings home lessons on life as a racialized Muslim woman living in Canada.
